Summary: In this presentation, emotions will be described as appraisal-driven fuzzy episodes of synchronized component processes, a mechanism that has evolved in the service of optimal adaptation of organisms to events in complex natural and social environments. The inherent fuzziness of emotion categories and processes has given rise to a certain degree of conceptual confusion that has beset theorizing and research over the past century. In the interest of “defuzzification”, a comprehensive theoretical model, the Component Process Model of emotion (CPM) is described providing a dynamic architecture that allows empirically testing concrete predictions concerning emotion production (emergence) and perception. The major results of a systematic research program carried out over several decades will be briefly outlined touching upon appraisal sequences and the consequent efferent response configurations, the categorization and verbal labeling of feeling states, the prediction of labelled feeling states from theoretically postulated appraisal profiles, and the inference mechanisms underlying emotion perception and recognition. Brief excursions will demonstrate the relevance of the model for developmental (unfolding of emotional complexity), clinical (DSM-V diagnostics), organizational (emotional competence assessment) and sociopolitical (minimal wage) psychology. A brief overview of work in progress, focusing on aesthetic emotions in art and music, will conclude the presentation.
