  • Short Biography:

After working as teacher (1961-1967) Heinz Mandl studied psychology (Dipl.-Psych.) at LMU Munich and received his diploma in psychology in 1971. In 1975 he obtained his doctorate degree in psychology, educational science, and sociology at LMU. From 1967 to 1978 he worked as research assistant and senior lecturer at University of Augsburg. Besides lecturing, his research areas included cognitive development of elementary school children regarding the scissors effect in the context of the Augsburg five-year longitudinal study with 3.000 elementary schools.
1978 he became full professor for Educational Science at the University of Tübingen and Head of the Research Group for Learning at the German Institute for Distance Education. From 1988-1990 he served as Director of this Institute. Research areas were knowledge acquisition with text and pictures and research on intelligent tutoring systems in the context of the DFG Priority Program “Knowledge Psychology” (1986-2002) co-initiated by him.
In 1995 Heinz Mandl was among the founders of the European Association on Learning and Instruction. In Tübingen he stimulated European research activities by organizing the 2nd EARLI Conference on Learning and Instruction 1989.
1990 he took over the chair for Educational Science and Educational Psychology at LMU Munich. He was Dean of the Faculty of Psychology and Education at LMU Munich (1995-2000). Main topics of research were in the context of co-initiated DFG-Priority programs: “Teaching-learning processes in initial business education” (1994-2001), “Net-based knowledge communication in groups” (2000-2006), and DFG research group “Knowledge and action” (1994-2001).
In Munich he organized the 40th Conference on Knowledge and Action for the German Society of Psychology 1996. Further on he was visiting professor at the universities of Fribourg (CH, 1999), Helsinki (F, 2000), Viseu (P, 2000), Zürich, (CH, 2002), Linz (A, 2002), and Teheran (IR, 2005 & 2006). He was President of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI 1989-1991).
Since 2003, he is Professor Emeritus. From 2003 to 2006 he substituted his chair. Since today he is active in educational science and psychology especially in research and development projects (Flanigan, A. E., Kiewra, K. A. & Luo, L. (2018).
