Research Interests

Visual attention: relationships among space-, object-, and dimension-based mechanisms, and between pre-attentive and focal attentional processes of visual selection

Visual search: memory-based guidance of singleton feature and feature conjunction searches

Functional neuroimaging (EEG, fMRI), neuropsychology, and computational modeling of (dimension-based) visual attention

Temporal feature-object binding: role of visual attention in binding

Biographical Statement

Between 2000 - 2022, Prof. Hermann Müller was a Chair Professor of General and Experimental Psychology at the Psychology Department, LMU Munich. His previous appointments include: from 1997-2000, Professor (Chair) of Experimental Psychology at the University of Leipzig (the Chair of the founder of academic psychology, Wilhelm Wundt); from 1992-1997, Lecturer / Senior Lecturer / Reader in Psychology at the Department of Psychology, Birkbeck College (University of London), UK.

He gained his Ph.D. in 1986 at the University of Durham, UK (supervised by Prof. John Findlay), and his Master's degree in 1982 at the University of Würzburg, Germany (supervised by Prof. Dieter Heller).

Hermann Müller’s teaching areas include general and experimental psychology, in particular: perception, attention, and memory, as well as experimental-psychological methodology. His research interests include visual attention and perception, visual search, object recognition, visual short-term/working memory, executive functions, goal-directed action, visual awareness and consciousness, neuro-psychology (diagnostics) of attentional deficits, and cognitive ergonomics.

Since 2000, Hermann Müller and his group have obtained more than 5 million € (Euros) in research grant income (mainly from the DFG, German Research Foundation), and he has published more than a hundred original research papers in major international journals of Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience, as well as contributing nearly 20 articles to edited collections. In addition, since 2000, he has co-edited several books and special-issue journal volumes. For his achievements in research, he was awarded a special LMUexcellence Research Professorship in 2007.

Besides the research professorship, he is the Program Director of the “M.Sc. in Neuro-cognitive Psychology (NCP)”; co-ordinator of “Research Area A: Neuro-cognitive Foundations” and Member of the Executive Board of the excellence cluster “Cognition for Technical Systems (CoTeSys)”; Founding Member and Member of the Executive Board of the “Munich Center for Neurosciences (MCN)”; and Principal Investigator and Member of the Scientific Board of the “Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences (GSN)”.
